"Dr.
Bob later said that he could not remember ever feeling much worse
than he did on the afternoon [Mother's Day, 1935] he met Bill. What
caused Dr. Bob to stay for the evening instead of fleeing, as
planned? To begin with, he quickly realized that this Bill
Wilson knew what he was talking about. Dr. Bob had read a
great deal about alcoholism and had heard the opinions of fellow
professionals who had treated alcoholics. But Bill was the
first person he had talked with who knew from his own experience
what alcoholism was. 'In other words, he talked my language,'
said Bob." c. 1984, Pass It On...The story of Bill
Wilson’s first meeting with Dr. Bob and how the A.A. message reached
the world, page 143
Alcoholics
Anonymous
has
saved so many of our lives.
We have gratitude for the program and to Bill W. and Dr. Bob for
their efforts in starting AA.
June 10th is traditionally looked at in AA as
Founders Day. The
speakers for the June Personal Recovery Workshop reflect gratitude
that comes from a place of total surrender and a commitment to
working the Steps. We
hope you will share a very special evening in recognition of the
founding of AA and the importance of meetings in
recovery.
"The
last fifteen years of my life have been rich and meaningful. I
have had my share of problems, heartaches and disappointments
because that is life, but also I have known a great deal of joy and
a peace that is the handmaiden of an inner freedom. I have a
wealth of friends and, with my A.A. friends, an unusual quality of
fellowship. For, to these people, I am truly related.
First, through mutual pain and despair, and later through mutual
objectives and newfound faith and hope.
"...In return for a bottle and a hangover, we have been given the
Keys of the Kingdom."
